An exclusive peek at Canada Blooms the Flower & Garden Festival
March 18 – 22, 2009

Plastic nursery pots can be a landfill nightmare – or, in the hands of talented artists Jennifer Marman and Daniel Borins, they can become a provocative and unconventional work of art. Canada Blooms is privileged to welcome this renowned artistic team who will create Land-Escape, a sculptured landscape that re-imagines a landfill site teaming with discarded plastic pots, transforming shredded plastics, bulk material and pellets into a brightly coloured art installation. Land-Escape is presented with the support of JVK and Myers Industries Lawn & Garden.

So many tempting products await you at this year’s expanded Marketplace that we’ve organized help. Landscape Ontario’s Green for Life initiative is offering a free parcel check service, conveniently located in Room 830 on the 800 Level, and Rent-a-Son has come to your rescue with a free delivery service that will help get your purchases to the car. With your parcels safely out of the way, you can spend a carefree day enjoying the gardens, lectures and exhibits. Arrange your delivery through the Marketplace vendor where you make your purchase. Although these services are free, donations to Canada Blooms are appreciated.

Rototilling your garden actually destroys soil structure. Not only does it kill worms but also, other members of the soil food web are displaced and the fungal network that builds soil structure is disrupted. When planting, dig as little as possible and only in the immediate area. When adding organic matter, lay it on the surface and allow the soil food web organisms to do the mixing. Jeff Lowenfels offers these and other tips on Wednesday, March 18 at 3:30 p.m. as part of the RBC Speaker Series.

There’s an easy way to get to and from the show this year.
