An exclusive peek at Canada Blooms the Flower & Garden Festival
March 18 – 22, 2009

Bring your children – or your inner child – to the Bienenstock Natural Playground, designed by Gardens For Living for this year’s show. This fully accessible playground of natural features and wonders will transport you to a natural world of play and imagination. Teachers from the Toronto Botanical Garden will engage children of all ages in ecological activities under the tree fort while representatives from the McMaster Child Health Research Institute will share their knowledge of the benefits of nature’s effects on our children. Before leaving, be sure to join Debbe Shannon and help create a nature mural that will be installed at an inner city school after the show.

nanoGarden is one of the many new exhibitors at the expanded Canada Blooms Marketplace. nanoGarden is an organic, homeopathic plant medicine for potted plants, lawns, flowerbeds, shrubs, vegetables or hanging baskets. For details, visit the nanoGarden website. To help you plan your shopping experience at this year’s show, see the complete Marketplace exhibitors’ list at canadablooms.ca.

Winter is a great time to prune trees and shrubs. Take this tip from the Master Gardeners. Make sure your secateurs are sharp and clean. Between cuts, sterilize them with a spritz of rubbing alcohol from a small spray bottle. This is especially important to do when cutting diseased branches to prevent the bacteria or fungus from spreading to the next plant you plan to prune. Bring your gardening questions to Master Gardeners Lunch Panel at the Ask the Experts stage, held daily at 12:15.

The perfumed petals of flowers hold intriguing secrets. Keynote speaker Dr. Robert Raguso of Cornell University will discuss the importance of floral scent and its impact on people in a special evening lecture at 7 p.m. during Scents & Sensibilities – Plant Day on Friday, March 20. “Offering a keynote speaker in the early evening is a first for Canada Blooms,” says Darlene Brown, director, public relations and communications at Vineland Research and Innovation Centre, Signature Sponsor at Canada Blooms. “We think this will be of particular interest to those folks who work during the day and can’t get to the show in time to see a keynote speaker,” she adds. Join Dr. Raguso and find out why scientists are stopping to smell the flowers.

Advanced tickets to Canada Blooms are now available from the floral department at a Sobeys store near you. Adult tickets are $16 ($18 at the show). Tickets for the Canada Blooms Opening Night Party are also available online at canadablooms.com. This spectacular St. Patrick’s evening event is hosted by Sobeys, Tourism Ireland and RBC.
