An exclusive peek at Canada Blooms the Flower & Garden Festival
March 18 – 22, 2009

The theme of this year’s Flower and Garden Festival is Canada Blooms, celebrating the talents of Canadian floral, horticultural and landscape designers. The flamboyant parrot tulip that appears on the Canada Blooms newsletter and posters captures the spirit of the show. It’s a versatile flowerbulb that can be planted in gardens from coast to coast. Artistic director Colomba Fuller is excited about the dramatic entrance to this year’s event. You’ll step through a giant black box and be dazzled by jets of water that rise high above you and masses of cascading white flowers. On the show floor, you’ll see a novel sculpture crafted of thousands of recycled plastic nursery pots and trays. And in the Garden Club of Toronto’s Garden Hall, exhibits inspired by the flower show’s From Sea to Sea theme will amaze and delight you.

The Canada Blooms Speaker Series presents five days of themed talks by Canada’s top gardening experts. Wednesday, March 18 is all about Organic Gardening while on Design Day, Thursday, March 19, top landscapers will share their best ideas. Friday, March 20 is Scents and Sensibility Plant Day, sponsored by Vineland Research and Innovation Centre. On Saturday, March 21, Ecology Day find out how to green your backyard and Sunday, March 22, is all about Urban Gardening.

Marketplace has expanded this year with special feature areas, including exciting Garden Travel destinations, Living Green exhibits, the Gardener’s Fare area and Bounty’s Harvest. Marketplace manager Gilles Bouchard has been busy organizing the new Designer’s Walk area, too, where you’ll see the innovative projects of talented professional landscapers and garden designers.

At this year’s show, you’ll see garden designs and products that will make Canada bloom. More than 25 display gardens filled with colour, texture and fragrance will help turn winter blahs into springtime delights. Horticultural director Charlie Dobbin is excited about the many interactive opportunities at the show, from hands-on children’s activities to casting your vote in the People’s Choice Award for your favourite garden – with a chance to win a trip to Ireland, courtesy Tourism Ireland.
