'Tis the season to bundle up and enjoy the holidays with our loved ones, but while the weather outside may be frightful, a gardener's call never ends. For tips on tasks Canadians should keep on top of this winter, we turned to John Statham, owner of John's Garden in Uxbridge, ON.
Outdoor Chores
- Keep containers watered until the ground freezes.
- Give branches a fresh cut before adding them to any arrangements or wreaths.
- Protect your roses by mounding sand or top dresser around the base of each bush (6-9"/15-22.5cm). Do this after the ground freezes to help prevent vermin from wreaking havoc on your plants.
Indoor Plants
Indoor plants are growing less actively now, so don't fertilize, and only water sparingly when soil is dry. Check them every five days for pesky aphids and spray any invaders with a mix of water, dish soap and vegetable oil.
Holiday Arrangements
- Spray any greenery you bring indoors with Wilt-Pruf, a natural aid that keeps your foliage fresh and hydrated.
- Spritz arrangements with water to release the aromas of cedar, pine, eucalyptus, and all of your fragrant favourites.
Don't miss a beat of what's happening on the pages of Gardens Central this season.

Lush red poinsettias and captivating cyclamen – festive holiday décor, or extra holiday stress? It’s true, keeping these daunting divas happy can be a bit tricky. No worries, Master Gardeners are here to help so we may all have horticulturally happy holidays!
Treat your cyclamen like you would a teenager. They like to be cool, but hang out in a very bright location. Don’t let them get soused as it can lead to their demise. After the party is over, cyclamen fall into a deep, dark sleep. Don’t worry; it’s a normal re-energizing behavior.
Poinsettias, on the other hand should be treated like your maidenly aunt – plunk in a warm sunny spot that is absolutely free from drafts. Too much or not enough drink will make them wilt, so always be attentive. At some point the visit becomes interminable, and you must decide to compost or start inspiring next year’s colour. For absolution or inspiration, please drop by our Master Gardener advice clinic at Canada Blooms. And don’t forget, Master Gardeners are available through www.mgoi.ca all year around to help you cope with any horticultural stress. Bring on the rum and eggnog!
